XChat is a cross-platform graphical IRC client. The official Windows binary is shareware, however a third-party compiled version of XChat for Windows can be downloaded from http://www.silverex.org/download/, which has no 30-day limitation.

The linux versions are not shareware. Those wishing to use recent code can easily compile from source on linux platforms.

When installing on Windows, be sure to untick all scripting languages (unless you know what they are and have them installed). Will save you from some error messages later on.

Support for XChat is available in #xchat.

Getting to our chat Channel

  1. Launch XChat. In Windows, just double-click on the XChat icon. In *nix (Linux, BSD, etc.), type xchat at the terminal prompt
  2. Now you are in XChat. Type /server irc.freenode.net
  3. Wait a moment and you are connected. To change your IRC nickname, type /nick <nickname>
  4. To join the SHellium channel (#shellium): /join #shellium

Automating XChat

If you'd like to keep coming back to our channel with the least effort follow this guide.

  1. Once you've executed XChat by double clicking or the command xchat from *nix, use the key: Ctrl + S
  2. The network list should appear, if not go to the menu XChat and find the network list.
  3. Scroll down and find the network Freenode (should already be there).
  4. Select it and click edit.
  5. If you want XChat to auto-connect to this network, tick the auto-connect checkbox.
  6. You will notice a box called "favorite channels", fill in our channel name with the hash: #shellium
  7. Notice the box "Nickserv Password", remember this for later once you register your nickname (/msg nickserv register help for more info on registering your nick with services)
  8. You can now close the window, all changes will be saved.
  9. If you only wish to connect to Freenode you should tick the option on the network list "Skip network list on startup"

Now all you have to do is run XChat and you'll show up in our channel (and what other channels you wish).
