Language codes and names

ISO 639-2 Codes(2 letter codes) should be used for language codes and names. (Codes affected by the change would be 'phl' and 'ind', as for the moment) centauri 10:56, 30 November 2008 (UTC)

yes, but there're no 2-letter code for some languages, so 3-letter codes should be used for some languages --Somebody 19:40, 6 April 2009 (UTC)

Main pages

Shellium has users speaking many languages. But when navigating through native part of wiki, not english users have to open english pages. Main national pages (example Ru:, Nl:) are supposed to be main, but links to them are mostly in English main page, but english main page is accesses everywhere from wiki by clicking big button with SH logo in top left.

I (User:Somebody) offer following.

Add to national pages link to main page of that language. This can be done by adding a line to Template:Languages with customizable text, different text for different languages.

Now there is template Template:Testlang which contains existing content of Template:Languages and customizable text. The template looks to /xy language code and includes Template:Testheader/xy of that language. English pages doesn't have /en, but a link to main english page already exist, so the template doesn't include any new text in english pages.

Also there're pages Testpage and Testpage/ru using Template:Testlang, so you can see how it works.
Look to sources of Template:Testlang, Template:Testheader/ru, Testpage and Testpage/ru.

Of course, "Testheader/xy" will be changed to "Header/xy".

Also, list of languages in English main page differs from languages in Template:Languages. So I offer remove languages from Main Page (and other main pages) and add updated Template:Languages to Main Page. Also move all current main pages (Ru:, Ua:, Es: etc) to Main Page/xy (ex. Main Page/bg) to make links in english main page to be correct.

Any ideas?

I find annoying to have a link in each page to the main page --centauri 22:35, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

Late comment

Now there's a bug in Template:Languages, namespace is ommited. For example, links in Help:Editing link to Editing/xy, not to Help:Editing/xy. So it's impossible to create another version of Help:Editing which have correct link to Help:Editing. Now Template:Testlang is fixed to use namespaces. But Template:NAMESPACEBASEPAGE need to be protected. --Somebody 19:38, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

Idea

Whenever the parser-extension is installed again, you could try and see if it can be used in Mediawiki:Sidebar so you can add a link to the MP of the current language to the menu on the left. --TheCainer 15:55, 29 August 2009 (UTC)

It's only me or it isn't working?

This template is not working for me. --MiniBill 15:20, 29 August 2009 (UTC)

Since the hack, there have been missing several things from the wiki. One of those things is an extension that the language-bar needs to work.
So no, it's not just you, it simply doesn't work because of the hack.

Bryanstein first has to reinstall that extension whenever he has time before it'll work again ;)
