Pidgin is an open source, multi-server, cross platform instant messenger with support for 25 protocols outside of IRC. You can get Pidgin from www.pidgin.im/download as either source code or as a compiled application.

Note: It is NOT recommended that you use Pidgin for IRC, as it lacks some of IRC's usability functions. Try another client, such as irssi instead.

  • Launch Pidgin: In windows, double click the pidgin icon. On Ubuntu/Ubuntu variants, go to Applications -> Internet -> Pidgin. On other *nix systems, type this into the terminal:
 pidgin
  • Connecting to server
 Go to Accounts -> Add/Edit
 Click the Add button at the bottom
 Under Protocol, select IRC
 Put your nickname into Screen name
 Put irc.freenode.net as server
 Click Save
 Go to Buddies -> Add Chat
 Under Account, select the one that ends in @irc.freenode.net (IRC)
 Under Channel, type #shellium
 Under Group, put it in the group you want (or type a new group name)
 Double click the item in the main menu that says #shellium
