DMDirc
DMDirc is an Open Source, cross-platform Internet Relay Chat (IRC) client developed in Java programming language. It can be easily installed and used on multiple Operating Systems, to name a few: Windows, Linux, OS X, BSD and Solaris.
DMDirc, the "Intelligent IRC Client" offers easily extendible Plug-ins, such as: Relay Bot support, Spellchecker, KDE4 Notifications, Nowplaying (which supports iTunes, Kaffeine, Last.fm, Dragon Player, Winamp etc) and many other plugins.
In addition to IRC, DMDirc can connect to Twitter (or any other site using the Twitter API, such as identi.ca).
It has support for both mIRC and hex colours, as well as bold, italics and more.
To Install DMDirc on Linux? Firstly, make sure you have Java installed. If Java is not installed, you probably need to download a copy of it (Sun Microsystems Java Runtime Environment (JRE)). How to install Java on Linux? Check this neat tutorial

How to install DMDirc on Linux OS
Download the "Linux installer" (DMDirc-0.6.3-Setup.run, 1.5M).
Execute the following command in Terminal:
chmod +x DMDirc-0.6.3-Setup.run
To run DMDirc, simply execute:
./DMDirc-0.6.3-Setup.run
How to install DMDirc on Windows OS
Again, make sure Java is installed on your Computer. Download the "Windows installer" (DMDirc-0.6.3-Setup.exe, 2.1M).
Once downloaded, follow the installation-instructions there. Nothing confusing nor complicated.
