First Steps

Shellium Rules

Take a few moments to familiarize yourself with the Shellium server and IRC channel Rules, as you will be asked about them before and/or during your Trial Period. Neglecting these rules will have a negative influence on your vouches.

Registering at SHellium.org

Warning! A valid email is required in order to verify the account.

Registering your nickname with NickServ

To complete the registration process, a valid NickServ account is required. Note: If you've never used IRC (Internet Relay Chat) before, or don't currently have an IRC client installed, you can use the web client at webchat.freenode.net. (If you are using the noscript addon for Firefox, please add webchat.freenode.net to the exclusion list). Another simple alternative is a famour addon for Firefox - ChatZilla (just click on freenode in *client* tab, /join #shellium once installed). A comparative listing of clients here.

Once you have connected to freenode, you can begin the registration process.

Issue: /msg NickServ register <password> <email>

After issuing the command, NickServ will send you an email. You will be required to send NickServ the verification code found in the email. If you don't receive a email, please ask in #freenode.

Once these steps are completed, head back to the SHellium website and add your nickname to the Freenode account field. Finally, click Submit to save your changes.

If all works out well, you should now be registered with SHellium and freenode.

Account Activation

Before logging into the shell with SSH, your shell account should be activated. You can read here about the activation process.

After Activation

Logging into your shell at SHellium.org

Please see Using SSH for a guide on how to use SSH to connect to SHellium and how to use SFTP to upload files.

Basic Unix Commands

Information on some basic shell commands can be found at Basic Unix Commands.

While On Trial

After you have gotten the necessary vouches and an admin has added you to a trial account, keep these rules in mind:

1. You are allowed two (2) background processes.

2. You may NOT give out your shell password to any user, nor may you log onto a shellium account that does not belong to you. If you are having problems or difficulties, contact an admin on the channel for assistance. You may give your shell password to an admin, but admin really doesn't ever need your password.

3. After running the 'shident' command in the shell, be sure to type 'myports' in the shell as well. This command will give you your two (2) assigned ports that are yours alone. Be sure and write these down for future reference for those processes needing specific ports. This command also tells you if you are running any ports not assigned to you, or 'bad' ports. If you run a bad port or ports, your account will be locked. For those users running a SHegg or eggdrop bot, be aware that many statistic or 'stats' scripts can call open other ports, earning you a 'bad ports' mention.

4. Your trial period will last seven (7) days. While you are on trial, you will be required to log in at least once a day to the #shellium channel and participate in the conversation. On the seventh and last day of your trial, you must message an admin and tell them you have completed your week on trial. If you were added to trial on a Monday, the next Monday would be your last day on trial. If you were added on a Tuesday, the next Tuesday is your last day, etc.

If you do not contact an admin on your seventh day, you will have failed your trial, and your account will be locked. If your account has been locked, message an admin.
